Two men have been arrested following the discovery of a skimming device attached to a cash machine outside an Asda supermarket in Hinckley, Leicestershire.
The device was reportedly found just before 5pm on Wednesday, June 4, at the store located on Barwell Road. Leicestershire Police were alerted and attended the scene promptly. Witnesses reported seeing the area cordoned off with police tape during the evening, and a patrol car parked nearby as officers began their investigation.
Police have since confirmed that two men, aged 55 and 45, were taken into custody on suspicion of theft, which includes the offence of “theft by finding.” As of Thursday morning (June 5), both men remain in police custody as enquiries continue.
In a statement provided to LeicestershireLive, a police spokesperson said:
“Just before 5pm yesterday (Wednesday 4 June), a report was received that a skimming device had been placed on the machine. Two men aged 55 and 45 were subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft including theft by finding.”
Skimming devices are typically used to illegally collect card data from unsuspecting users, posing a significant risk of fraud. The discovery has prompted concerns among local residents, many of whom use the cash machine regularly.
Police have not confirmed whether any customer card information was compromised and have advised anyone who recently used the ATM to monitor their bank accounts and report any suspicious activity to their bank and the police.
Investigations are ongoing.
