A wave of “mindless vandalism” has struck multiple parks and public facilities in Earl Shilton, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage. The series of destructive incidents has prompted an investigation by Leicestershire Police as local authorities and residents grapple with the repercussions.
Escalating Vandalism Across Town
The vandalism spree began with attacks on the disabled toilets on Wood Street. According to Leicestershire Police, the extent of the damage has forced the closure of these facilities outside of library hours, severely impacting disabled residents who rely on them. The situation has since worsened, with reports of destruction spreading to multiple parks, including Wood Street Park, Weavers Springs, and Hallfield Park.
Among the reported damage are deliberately smashed glass strewn across children’s play areas, newly planted spring flowers being destroyed, and bins being set on fire. Officers noted that the destruction has rendered several areas unsafe for public use, creating concerns for both public safety and local finances.
New Attacks on Public Infrastructure
On the night of Wednesday, March 26, a newly installed bus shelter on King Richard’s Walk became the latest target. The Hinckley beat team confirmed that the incidents appear to follow a consistent pattern, occurring during the evening or overnight hours.
A spokesperson for the Hinckley beat team emphasized the financial burden the vandalism places on the community: “All this has significant cost to Earl Shilton Town Council and you the taxpayers, especially when budgets are already being squeezed. I am sure that money could be better spent on other facilities in the area instead of replacing damaged items due to a lack of respect.”
Financial and Community Impact
Earl Shilton Town Council chairman and Mayor, Martin Leman, disclosed that the total cost of the damage is nearing £2,000. He stressed that these funds are effectively coming directly from the pockets of local taxpayers, diverting resources from other essential community services.
“Earl Shilton Town Council are very proud of our parks, facilities, events, and town. It is upsetting for everyone to see the acts of anti-social behaviour, especially the mindless vandalism,” he said.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Leicestershire Police have launched an investigation into the spree, with CCTV footage currently being reviewed for potential leads. Officers have also committed to increasing patrols in parks and other vulnerable areas during evenings and weekends to deter further incidents.
Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made so far. Police are urging anyone with information about the vandalism to come forward to aid in their investigation.
As the town grapples with the damage and its financial consequences, residents and authorities hope that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice, ensuring that public spaces remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
