A tragic collision on the A47 Normandy Way in Hinckley last night claimed the lives of two people, with a third left in critical condition. The crash occurred around 10:20 pm on Friday near the crossroads junction with the A447 Ashby Road.
The victims include a 23-year-old woman who was driving a red Ford Fiesta and a 31-year-old man who was a passenger in a grey Audi S4. Both were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The 29-year-old driver of the Audi S4 sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to University Hospital Coventry and Walsgrave, where he remains in critical condition.
A third vehicle, a black Audi S3, was not involved in the collision but is believed to have been travelling in convoy with the grey Audi. The 29-year-old Leicester man who was driving the Audi S3 has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
Leicestershire Police, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, and East Midlands Ambulance Service all responded to the incident. Normandy Way remained closed throughout the night to allow for a full police investigation and only reopened at around 8:35 am this morning.
In a statement issued earlier today, police confirmed the sequence of events leading up to the crash. Detective Sergeant Ed Des-Chanelle, who is leading the investigation for the Serious Collision Investigation Team, has urged any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area to come forward.
“I am very keen to hear from anyone who was driving in the area of the A47 last night and can offer any information about the manner in which all of these cars were driving,” said DS Des-Chanelle. “Any information may help our investigation into this collision, which took the lives of two people. Anyone with dashcam footage – we need to see it.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the police by calling 101 and quoting incident number 710 of 18 October, or submit information online via the Leicestershire Police website.
This tragic incident has left the Hinckley community reeling, with thoughts and condolences pouring in for the victims and their families.
