Hinckley and Bosworth Community Hospital has recently unveiled five new beds, elevating the capacity of the East ward from 23 to 28 beds. This development is particularly significant for patients in Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland. The increased capacity will primarily cater to individuals who have concluded their treatment in acute hospitals but require supplementary care either for a smooth transition home or placement in a care facility.
Nikki Beacher, the deputy director for community health services at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT), expressed enthusiasm about the positive impact on patient care. She emphasized that the additional capacity would serve patients with post-treatment needs, offering nursing, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy to facilitate their ongoing recovery. This initiative aims not only to assist patients in their recuperation journey but also to alleviate the strain on acute hospitals by preventing some individuals from needing acute care altogether.
The expansion of bed capacity aligns with the commitment of the Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland Integrated Care Board, which has allocated £9 million for the current and upcoming years to augment the number of community hospital beds. Across the eight community hospitals, this funding is expected to contribute to an increase of 52 beds.
To support this growth, LPT is planning to bring on board an additional 227 staff, including nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and support staff. This strategic staffing increase will ensure that the extended capacity is accompanied by the necessary healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to the growing number of patients across the hospitals.
