Celebrations are set to take place across the country from Thursday, 8 May to Sunday, 11 May, as communities come together to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Leicestershire County Council is encouraging local communities to take part in the historic occasion by applying for free road closures to host street parties. The initiative aims to support residents in organising events to commemorate the end of the Second World War in Europe, which officially took place on Thursday, 8 May 1945.
While there is usually a charge associated with closing roads for events, the council is waiving this fee to make it easier for communities and groups to participate in the celebrations. However, those interested must submit their applications by the deadline of Friday, 21 March.
In addition to free road closures, the council is also offering organisers the opportunity to borrow signs and cones at no cost. These items will need to be collected from and returned to the Mountsorrel Highways Depot. Like the road closure applications, requests for signs and cones must also be submitted by Friday, 21 March, as availability cannot be guaranteed after this date.
Residents and community groups keen on hosting a street party or public gathering are encouraged to take advantage of this offer and ensure they apply in time. With national celebrations planned across the UK, Leicestershire’s initiative provides an excellent opportunity for local communities to come together and honour this significant moment in history.
