Gates Garden Centre has officially confirmed its takeover of Dobbies Stapleton, marking an exciting expansion for the family-run business with over 75 years of history. The former Woodlands Garden Centre, located near Hinckley, was acquired by Gates on 1st February 2025.
With an already successful garden centre at Cold Overton near Oakham, the company has announced that the newly acquired site will be rebranded as Gates Woodlands Hinckley. The centre, previously operated by Dobbies, ceased operations in January 2025.
About Gates Garden Centre
Gates Garden Centre, established in 1948, is one of the largest independent garden centres in the UK. Located in Cold Overton, Rutland, it offers an extensive range of plants, garden furniture, homeware, gifts, and outdoor living products. The centre is also known for its award-winning restaurant and farm shop, providing high-quality local produce and a unique shopping experience. Over the years, Gates has built a reputation for excellence, customer service, and innovation in the garden retail sector.
Commitment to Staff and Expansion Plans
Gates Garden Centre has confirmed that the existing team from Dobbies will remain, bringing their expert knowledge and experience to the new venture. Additionally, the company has revealed plans to recruit more staff to support the expansion and development of the site.
Nigel Gates expressed his enthusiasm for the new acquisition, stating:
“The Gates team are excited to collaborate with their new colleagues, enhancing and expanding the existing infrastructure to deliver the signature Gates brand experience at this much-loved Garden Centre.”
Refurbishment and Future Developments
While the garden centre is currently closed for refurbishment, many concessions remain open for business. A sign outside the main entrance on the A447 informs visitors that the garden centre is temporarily closed.
Gates Garden Centre has built a strong reputation, with its Oakham restaurant and Farm Shop recently being named the best in the UK by the Garden Centre Association. The company has stated that these successful experiences will be recreated at the Hinckley location, ensuring a high-quality shopping and dining experience for customers.
This expansion signifies an exciting new chapter for Gates Garden Centre, as they bring their expertise and passion for gardening to an even wider audience.
Dogs are no longer welcome at the Garden Centre following the takeover so we won’t be visiting any longer. Such a shame as we really liked going there.
