Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council Join Forces to Combat Littering

In a united effort to combat the persistent problem of littering in the region, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council (HBBC) has thrown its support behind the Leicestershire Waste Partnership’s campaign, aptly named “It’s All Littering.” This collective initiative sees various Leicestershire councils working in tandem to raise awareness about the adverse effects of littering and take action against those who disregard the cleanliness of their communities.

Councillor Michael Wyatt, the portfolio holder for community services at North West Leicestershire District Council and spokesperson for the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, underscored the urgency of addressing littering: “Littering is an issue for all of our communities, so we’re joining forces to raise awareness of the many things that are littered across the county.” The partnership’s message is straightforward and unambiguous: whether it’s a discarded cigarette butt, an apple core tossed out of a car window, or a plastic bottle carelessly left next to a bin, it all constitutes littering. Offenders can face fines of up to £2,500, with a fixed penalty notice of £150 for those caught in the act.

The scale of the litter problem in the UK is staggering, with a shocking 30 million tonnes of litter collected from the nation’s streets annually, equivalent to filling four Wembley Stadiums. While councils actively work to identify and penalize litter offenders, the region is also fortunate to have dedicated networks of litter-picking volunteers.

Councillor Lynda Hodgkins, Executive Member for Street Scene Services at Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, expressed gratitude for the vital contribution of these volunteers: “A huge thanks to the volunteers who regularly give up their time to litter pick. These community efforts make a huge difference and enable us all to enjoy a cleaner, greener borough.” The campaign’s message is clear: maintaining clean parks, open spaces, and streets is a collective responsibility, and litter is not just an eyesore but also environmentally damaging.

For those seeking more information about the campaign and the environmental impact of littered items, the Leicestershire Waste Partnership website offers valuable resources. The campaign’s progress and updates can be followed on social media platforms using the hashtag #ItsAllLittering.

The Leicestershire Waste Partnership, a collaboration between Blaby District Council, Charnwood Borough Council, Harborough District Council, Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, Melton Borough Council, North West Leicestershire District Council, Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, and Leicestershire County Council, has also received the support of Leicester City Council. This united effort reflects a commitment to preserving the region’s natural beauty, enhancing the quality of life for its residents, and fostering a sense of communal responsibility in keeping Leicestershire clean and litter-free.
