Enthusiasts of history and families are extended a cordial invitation to take part in a series of complimentary Heritage Open Days scheduled across the borough during September.
The array of open days is set to commence on the 8th of September with an inaugural event, spanning until the 17th of September, thereby concluding in the following week.
This lineup of local highlights encompasses a captivating walking expedition encompassing numerous historic edifices within Hinckley, a theatrical presentation centered around the life of Joseph Hansom, the inventive mind behind the Hansom Cab, and an assortment of interactive activities and events hosted within the acclaimed Argents Mead.
The ‘Heritage Open Days’ program holds the distinction of being England’s most expansive celebration of culture and history. Its primary objective is to unveil access and insights into structures that often go unnoticed by the general public.
Highlighted Events:
- September 9th, 10 am to 12 pm: Atkins Heritage Tour Explore a walking tour of historically significant Hinckley buildings, all linked to the noteworthy Atkins hosiery family. - September 8th & 9th (10 am, 11 am, 3 pm): A Gentle Genius Play Witness a play titled ‘A Gentle Genius’ at the Atkins Building. This performance sheds light on Joseph Hansom, the inventive genius responsible for the Hansom Cab. Admission is free, and booking isn’t required. The play, presented by the Red River Theatre Group, is suitable for all ages.
- September 9th, 9 am: Great Meeting Unitarian Chapel, Hinckley Immerse yourself in an exhibition of archival materials, artistic creations, music, and poetry. A captivating talk on the Atkins Family in conjunction with the Hinckley & District Museum and Atkins Building is part of the program.
- September 9th, 2 pm to 3:30 pm: Burbage Heritage Tour Embark on a short walking tour of Burbage, organized by the Burbage Heritage Group. This tour delves into a hand-drawn map of Burbage, presenting its notable historical buildings and the stories of its inhabitants.
- September 9th, 10 am to 4 pm: Hinckley District Past and Present Engage with Hinckley District Past and Present’s exhibition at Hinckley Market, Castle Street. Explore local history through display boards and interact with group members.
- September 16th, 11 am to 4 pm: Pottery Workshops and Medieval Music, Argents Mead, Hinckley. Partake in family-friendly pottery workshops and experience hands-on medieval music. Witness a demonstration of siege weapons and try your hand at loading and firing. This event is both educational and entertaining.
- September 17th, 2 pm to 4 pm: Hinckley District and Museum Discover the charm of thatched timber box-framed cottages from the 1680s. These house a local history museum and a ‘secret’ cottage garden. Engage in play with ‘old fashioned’ toys and make use of the children’s dressing-up area.
- September 17th, 10 am to 4:30 pm: Hinckley BID’s 12th Annual Motorshow Concluding the heritage festivities, the 12th Annual Motorshow, hosted by Hinckley BID, will exhibit an array of classic and modern vehicles, providing entertainment for all ages.
All events are open to the public at no cost, and advance booking is only necessary for specific events.
Councillor Mark Bools, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Culture at the Borough Council, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s return, affirming the rich historical and cultural offerings within the Hinckley and Bosworth area. He emphasized that the festival provides a unique chance to explore the hidden histories of older buildings and to uncover the borough’s diverse areas.
